Overview

Corsicana is the seat of Navarro County, Texas. In 1848, the city’s founder Jose Antonio Navarro named Corsicana after the birthplace of his father. Corsicana was derived from Corsica, a Mediterranean island. Corsicana is comprised of a charming community found at Central Texas. In 1894, drillers accidentally discovered oil in the area, propelling the city to new heights. Today, the city enjoys a thriving tourism scene, characterized by outdoor sport attractions, annual events, wonderful art venues, and numerous dining and lodging places.

  • The presence of oil anywhere west of Mississippi was first discovered in the town of Corsicana. The town became the place of the first oil boom in Texas. Corsicana is presently known as one of the town’s wealthiest cities.
  • The first oil refinery in Texas known as the Magnolia Petroleum was built in Corsicana. The company is known as present as Mobil.
  • Corsicana is one of the state’s earliest cities to utilize the newfound natural gas for fuel and lighting purposes.

Tourist Attractions

The Cook Center Planetarium at Collin Street attracts a regular flock of customers. The planetarium houses the state’s largest dome theater. Children of all ages enjoy the laser, star, and large-format movies that aim to educate visitors. Governor’s Drive, Carriage District, and Mills Place are awesome places for some Historic Home sightseeing. Navarro County is famous as a regional retail destination. Major anchor stores include Russell Stover Candies, Office Depot, Home Depot, Bealls Department Store, and the Wal-Mart Super Center. The Historic Downtown has one of the oldest working soda fountains in the state. The shopping options include specialty items, furniture, clothing, and other fine antiques. The Lefty Frizzell Museum serves as a true monument for the hitmaker behind the songs ‘Always Late’ and ‘If You’ve Got the Money Honey.’ Western suites, photographs, and furniture of the famed country singer are located within this museum at Park Avenue. Corsicana is also the home of the country’s biggest privately owned museum. More than 10,000 square feet are filled with unusual artifacts, electrical appliances, and amazing communications equipment. The Glenn Cumbie Museum of Aviation and Military History feature memorabilia of aviation, artifacts, photographs, and exhibits of authentic uniforms. The Pearce Civil War & Western Art Museum gives guests the chance to experience two epic events from the 1800s. Works by the members of the National Sculpture Society, Cowboy Artists of America, and National Academy of Western Art are displayed in the museum.
