Portugal´s privileged geographical situation means it is frequently the country at which many foreign airlines prefer to stop over in the Airports placed in continental Portugal (Lisboa, Porto and Faro), Madeira (Funchal and Porto Santo) and Azores islands (Ponta Delgada, Lajes, Flores, Santa Maria and Horta)ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal, SA is the entity responsible for the Airports in Portugal, and the one that gives information about flights and timetables.

TAP - Air Portugal: with regular flights to more than 50 cities in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Macau and North and South America, as well as domestic flights between Porto, Lisbon, Faro and the Autonomous Regions of Madeira and the Azores, and also between the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo.
PORTUGÁLIA: regular domestic flights between Lisboa, Porto, Faro and Funchal, and international flights to Madrid, Barcelona, Berlin, Bilbao, Bologna, Bordeaux, Brussels, Casablanca, Cologne-Bonn, Hannover, Las Palmas, Lyon, Manchester, Marseille, Milan, Mulhouse-Basle, Nice, Palma de Maiorca, Stuttgart, Tenerife, Toulouse, Turin and Valencia
SATA: regular flights between all the islands of the Azores, and also from the Azores to Madeira island and to continental Portugal.
SATA has also regular international flights to Birmingham, Dublin, Glasgow, Insbruck, Jersey, Luxembourg, Manchester, Milan, Norwick Oslo, Paris, Rome, Stockholm and Vienna.
ATA - Aerocondor Transportes Aéreos -regular flights between Lisboa, Bragança and Vila Real, as well as between the islands of Porto Santo and Madeira.
By road
It is possible to enter Portugal by road at several points along its border with Spain. There is a good and extensive road network consisting of:AE - Auto-Estradas (Motorways)
IP - Itinerários Principais (Main Trunk Roads)
IC - Itinerários Complementares (Complementary Trunk Roads)
EN - Estradas Nacionais (Main Roads)
EM - Estradas Municipais (Municipal Roads)
All motorways are clearly signposted and a toll must normally be paid.
At all the toll booths, there is a Via Verde (Green Channel). This has a toll system, controlled by closed circuit television, that makes it possible to automatically debit toll charges from your bank account.
This channel is only open to those who have previously bought a green channel identification disk from the motorway operators Brisa.
There are regular coach services between all of Portugal`s cities and towns. For detailed information about routes, timetables and prices, you should consult the Rede Nacional de Expressos.
By rail
Should you wish to travel around Portugal by train, you will always be able to enjoy the valuable help of the national railway company CP - Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses. All you need to do is choose your destination!CP has a vast rail network with trains to destinations all over mainland Portugal. Connections with other trains are provided at almost all railway stations.
Here are just a few travel suggestions:
- the high-quality and comfortable "Alfa" trains offer you the fastest connection of all between Lisbon and Porto. They also stop at the cities of Coimbra and Aveiro
- the "Intercidades" service has trains serving the following major intercity routes Lisbon-Porto-Braga, Lisbon-Guarda, Lisbon-Covilhã, Lisbon-Alentejo and Lisbon-Algarve.
- the Sud-Express and the Lusitânia hotel-train provide the main international connections, departing from Lisbon and Porto.
In Lisbon area, Fertagus runs the rail connection between the two banks of River Tagus, crossing the Bridge. The train leaves at Entrecampos station (in Lisbon) up to the terminus at Fogueteiro (on the south bank), stopping at several stations such as Sete Rios and Campolide (north bank), and Pragal, Corroios and Foros de Amora (south bank).
A network of public transports connects the stations to the main places in the region.
Rent a car
At Portugal`s airports, international railway stations and transport terminals, and in all major towns and cities, there are self-drive rent-a-car services. For drivers who have motor disabilities, specially adapted cars are available, as well as cars with automatic gear-boxes.In order to rent a car, you must:
- be over 21
- show some identification (identity card for EU citizens or a valid passport for citizens from other countries)
- have had a valid full driving licence for over a year.
