Situated in the coastal region of Southern California, San Diego is the eight largest city of the United States and the second largest in California, ranking after Los Angeles. San Diego lies just north of the Mexican border and south of Orange County. It is home to miles of beaches, the United States Marine Corps and the United States Coast Guard. San Diego's economy is largely made up of agriculture, computer sciences, electronics manufacturing, biotechnology or biosciences, financial and business services, ship-repair and construction, defense-related manufacturing, software development, telecommunications, and tourism.

The very first European visitor to the region was a Portuguese explorer Juan Rodrigues Cabrillo who was sailing under the Spanish Flag. Since the early days of the 1980's San Diego has been undergoing an urban regeneration. This began with the opening of Horton Plaza and the restoration of the Gaslamp Quarter. Later on was constructed the famous San Diego Convention Center.

The same structure provides the city a highly segmented feel and creates literal gaps between otherwise proximal localities. This also contributes to a low-density, car-centered built environment. San Diego bay is separated from the ocean by the peninsulas called the Coronado and Point Loma. Ocean Beach is situated on the west of Point Loma. Pacific Beach and Mission Beach lie between the ocean and Mission Bay which is a man-made aquatic park. On the north of the Pacific Beach lies the prosperous commune La Jolla. San Diego County has one of the highest counts of animal and plant species that appear on the endangered species list among counties in the United States.

San Diego has a temperate and Mediterranean climate. The city enjoys mild and sunny weather all the year round. Snow and ice are almost absent in the wintertime. Particularly in the months of December through March there is a strong concentration of rainfall and most of it occurs during the colder half of the year. However the amount of rainfall in the city varies from year to year and month to month and is quite uncertain.

Since the early 1990's this city has witnessed a certain decline in the rate of criminal activities and in the year 2004 the total property crimes were lower than the national average. Public colleges and universities in the city include University of California, San Diego, the San Diego Community College District and San Diego State University.

The San Diego Community College District includes San Diego City College, San Diego Miramar College and San Diego Mesa College.

The popular tourist attractions of the city of San Diego include the various museums, such as the San Diego Museum of Art, the San Diego Museum of Man, the San Diego Natural History Museum, and the Museum of Photographic Arts are located Balboa Park. San Diego is also very popular as a tourist spot and tourism over here is highly developed as it welcomes visitors from around the globe.
